You know the saying – the first step to solving a problem is admitting you have the problem. This is basically awareness of the issue you want/need to change.
Of course, almost everyone I know who wants to make a change, is aware of the issue. Yes, I am aware I have gained way too much weight over the last 9 years…oh look a doughnut.
So, awareness of the issue – first thing.
Secondly is contemplation of how you will make that change and what it entails. Take some time and figure that out. Need to lose weight – how will that impact your life? How will you incorporate this new change? Who will support you?
Next is knowledge. When I first said I wanted to start running I read everything I could get my hands-on about running. In particular running for women over 40. Knowledge is key – however, don’t let that constant consumption of knowledge just be a way to procrastinate. Develop your plan and get started!
Action on that knowledge – this is where you implement your plan. Also, during this stage, we sometimes go back to the contemplation stage to tweak or make changes. This is also the stage where we often give up.
Perhaps we aren’t seeing the changes we want, or we aren’t really enjoying the action. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater here. Go back to the knowledge stage and try something else.
Next is Self- Motivation We start to see progress, feel better, and get into better habits and we continue our actions not because we have to, but because we want to.
